Puckett Machinery Company is the Caterpillar heavy equipment, rental services, and power systems dealer for central and southern Mississippi. As the industry leader in our territory with 15 locations, helping our customers succeed is our number one priority. Our Puckett Rents division is currently seeking a dynamic, experienced Service Technician-Used Equipment. (The position will initially work from the Puckett Rents location in Jackson (Richland) and will eventually be transitioned to our Gluckstadt location.) This position will report to the Used Equipment Manager.

The Service TechnicianUsed Equipment is responsible for preparing rental fleet machines and trade-in units for resale. This includes inspecting, diagnosing, and performing necessary repairs, reconditioning, and cosmetic improvements to ensure each machine meets Puckett CAT's used-equipment quality standards.

Equipment includes Caterpillar compact and heavy construction machines as well as ancillary equipment such as skid steers, compact track loaders, mini excavators, backhoes, dozers, aerial lifts, and various site-support products (generators, compressors, saws, etc.).

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, disassemble, repair, and reassemble components including powertrain, hydraulic, electrical AC/DC, gasoline/diesel systems, and engines (2- and 4-stroke) to prepare used machines for resale in accordance with quality and safety standards.
  • Identify mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and cosmetic issues through systematic troubleshooting to determine required reconditioning work.
  • Clean, repair, recondition, and detail equipment returned from the rental fleet or accepted on trade-in to meet Puckett CAT's used-equipment standards.
  • Test, measure, and adjust machine systems and components to ensure proper operation prior to final inspection and resale.
  • Evaluate component and part reusability based on manufacturer guidelines and used-equipment criteria; recommend replacement when required.
  • Learn to self-diagnose repairs and reconditioning needs based on budgetary guidelines and expected resale value.
  • Coordinate parts orders with the supervisor to support timely reconditioning and preparation of units for sale.
  • Perform CAT Certified Used inspections and function tests to ensure machines are fully retail-ready before they are listed for resale.
  • Prepare accurate, complete service documentation for all inspections, repairs, and reconditioning work using prescribed forms and procedures.
  • Communicate regularly with the supervisor regarding job status, significant findings, and any issues that may affect resale timelines or machine readiness.
  • Perform occasional on-site inspections or minor repairs on equipment located at customer sites or remote yards when requested.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and represent Puckett CAT appropriately when interacting with internal teams or customers.
  • Stay current with evolving technologies, tooling, and Caterpillar product updates to ensure high-quality reconditioning performance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Diesel engine, construction equipment and/or truck engine training and certifications through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred.
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years previous hands-on work experience as a diesel technician repairing Caterpillar or competitor heavy equipment or applicable diagnostic and troubleshooting experience as a technician in an automotive or truck engine repair shop.
  • Ability to read and comprehend moderately difficult computer-based schematics, specifications, service and parts literature, technical bulletins, safety manuals, and other related publications.
  • Solid mechanical systems knowledge of diesel engines/engine failures, electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Proficient in the use of mechanical test equipment.
  • Basic welding/torch cutting skills.
  • Ability to safely use material handling equipment and tooling and wear company required PPE (protective eyewear, gloves, harnesses, footwear) during a shift assignment that could last between 8 and 12 hours.
  • Must have and maintain a driving record (MVR) which adheres to the company's motor vehicle policy standards.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills, detail oriented, and ability to work with a high level of accuracy.
  • Good computer skills using related information system applications.
  • Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding customer expectations.
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic fast paced service environment.
  • Ability to work standard five-day work schedule, including daily overtime, and occasional weekend hours as necessary.

  • Possess a complete set of basic mechanic hand tools, including drives, sockets, and wrenches.
