Shop Machinist
JOB SUMMARY |
Shop Machinists repair and salvage construction/mining equipment and parts. Various levels of knowledge and abilities in the Essential Functions listed below are required and will determine job placement. Specific knowledge needed is dependent upon the individual departments within the company. Job placement will be based on knowledge, skills, and abilities in accordance with the following guidelines, including prior experience: · Apprentice I: Basic understanding of mechanical tools, service procedures and welding concepts. Experience: One year of previous machining experience or possess a strong mechanical aptitude. · Apprentice II: Possess basic machining skills, including the ability to complete simple jobs and meet spec requirements and demonstrate basic welding skills and perform basic welding procedure. Experience: Certificate from Technical school and/or two years of previous machining experience. · Shop: Competent in all machining tasks and understand the processes, troubleshooting, and basic repair of various Caterpillar equipment. Experience: Extensive machine shop experience. · Master: Expert in all machining tasks and ability to troubleshoot and perform advanced or new procedures. Experience: Minimum ten years of previous machining experience. · Regularly reviews data from the troubleshooting and inspection process to work up detailed, accurate and cost-effective job estimates. · Regularly reviews data from the troubleshooting and inspection process to work up detailed and accurate parts orders. · Regularly is required to operate mining and construction equipment and machine tools, and give hand signals to mobile crane operators. · Must work with a positive attitude and with a spirit of cooperation. · May be required to work out of town occasionally. · Participate and occasionally lead our daily safety meetings. |
QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILL/ABILITY |
· Machinists must be able to read and understand English, read and understand parts books, service manuals, electrical and hydraulic schematics and fabrication blueprints following ANSI, SAE, and /or Caterpillar's blueprinting standards. · Must have the ability to hand sketch drawings legibly enough for other machinists to understand and follow. · Ability and dexterity to manipulate two control knobs at a time is required for machine tool operation in a safe and effective manner. · Need to have the basic understanding of the welding process. · Machinists must have the ability to read and comprehend service literature, basic measuring tools and to know and understand basic arithmetic. · Must be able to type meaningful and legible service reports. · Must know and understand the various types of systems on a large number of different kinds of equipment, and must be able to use their ability in a meaningful and productive manner during the course of their daily job assignment. · Machinists must possess, or be able to acquire, the ability to operate machine tools equipped with Computerized Numerical Controls (CNC). · This ability should include a working knowledge of G and M codes, tool compensations and offsets, and axis and part referencing methods. · Computer workstations are an integral part of technical information retrieval; therefore, personal computer (PC) knowledge is of great importance; including the various software programs that are utilized here. · Machinists need to have been exposed to construction and mining equipment thru Technical schools or on the job training as a machinist or machinist's helper at a repair shop, construction company, small contractor or mine. |
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS |
· Material and equipment directly used: hand wrenches, hammers, impact tools, torque wrenches, screw drivers, basic and advanced measuring tools, overhead hoists, slings, chains, electrical testing equipment, hydraulic test equipment, tool grinders, lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, lapping equipment, portable boring machines and numerous other specialized testing, adjusting and measuring equipment. Most often, the employee must furnish the majority of the listed tools. In a standard 8 hour shift a worker must: · Walk and/or stand 5-8 hours on a concrete floor in a shop that may be very warm or cold. · Sit 1-3 hours. · 50 lbs. weight lifting restriction. · Use hands for simple grasping, pushing & pulling and fine manipulation. · Use feet frequently in repetitive movement. · Frequently bend, squat and climb. · Have the physical ability to work in any position on a piece of equipment. · Be willing to be exposed to grease, oil and dirt. · Be willing to work overtime as needed. · May be required to have a CDL. · May be required to have current MSHA training. |
