Position Overview:

As an Accounting Analyst I for Finning Canada, you will play an critical role in developing and improving accounting processes with an emphasis on efficiency and reliable controls. The successful candidate will be responsible to maintain and analyze specific segments of the balance sheet and income statement, providing value-added reporting to support decision making across the business. Additionally, this role is responsible for the application of accounting principles and practices in maintaining and updating financial records within the accounting systems in adherence with IFRS reporting standards.

The ideal candidate brings a solid understanding of accounting principles and practices and is responsible for accurate timely recording of transactions and issuing financial reports to support the needs of other teams. The individual will have experience with financial analysis and data validation.

Our Corporate Controllership Team currently works on a hybrid schedule and equally works from home and at our head office in the west end of Edmonton.

Job Description:

Major Job Functions:

Month-end close and Reconciliation (55%):

  • Prepare selected monthly/quarterly and ad-hoc journal vouchers with intermediate levels of complexity based on nature of accounts and/or dollar value
  • Identify, analyze and reconcile inconsistent information and recommend adjustments where necessary

Internal & External Audit (20%):

  • Collaborate closely with the auditors to provide requested financial information and supporting documents in a timely manner.
  • Support junior staff with more complicated audit requests and act as back-up for coverage when needed
  • Participate walkthroughs or testing procedures required by the auditors.

Analysis & Projects (10%):

  • Assist with ad-hoc projects, such as system implementations or process improvements; conduct financial analysis for business decision-making as directed by manager

Process Review & Improvement (10%):

  • Evaluate and drive accounting process improvements, while working with cross-functional teams to improve associated processes across the business.
  • Perform complex financial analysis, including: conducting research, identifying gaps in processes and results, designing and implementing solutions to support reporting and analysis requirements.
  • Review financial operating results to identify key trends, variances, and provide commentary to the financial reporting team.

Leadership, coaching, mentoring (5%):

  • Assist and perform training sessions to enhance the team’s skills and knowledge; Support to help train new and/or entry level team members
  • Other duties as assigned

Accountability:

Month-end close and Reconciliation:

  • Responsible for maintaining the general ledger and ensuring accurate recording of transactions of assigned accounts to support rapid and accurate period-end close.
  • Reconciling assigned accounts and resolving discrepancies for review by manager
  • Ensure reconciling items are resolved timely
  • Ensure adherence to all policies and legislation regarding accurate reporting of financial results
  • Ensure all financial analysis and recommendations are grounded and well supported
  • Support / troubleshoot for junior staff; Provide coverage to complete tasks before deadline as needed

Internal and External Audit:

  • Complete internal & external audit requests on time and accurately

  • Performs and assists in documentation and monitoring SOX key controls and ensures no gaps or deficiencies in the operation of key controls

Analysis and Project:

  • Collect, capture, and reconcile large amounts of data from a variety of sources and create report-style outputs
  • Ensure presentation of information is professional, timely and accurate
  • Provide financial expertise on accounting policies and standards, including the evaluation and analysis of routine events or transactions
  • Able to thrive under pressure and are able to independently manage work priorities and follow through on meeting deadlines

  • Act as an expert knowledge resource for assigned area of responsibilities to ensure compliance

  • Application expertise (desirable): Infor M3, BPC/AFO, Blackline, Power BI, SharePoint, Workday MS Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook

  • Modest level of cross-training

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor of Accounting/Finance is preferred
  • 1-2 years of progressive finance and accounting related experience in an analytical role in Finance or Accounting
  • Relevant experience with period-end close, financial analysis, internal control (CSOX), and financial process optimization
  • Working knowledge of General Ledger and Chart of Account Structures
  • Working Knowledge of accounting standards and regulatory requirements applicable to public companies (IFRS)
  • Extended hours of work maybe required during month-end close
