The Engine Dynamometer Technician-CRC is responsible for conducting quality control inspections and performance verification tests, which are required to ensure all reconditioned engines meet all published Caterpillar performance requirements and pass all final quality control checks before being returned to the customer. As part of the process, the technician is also responsible for the preparation and connection to the engine dynamometer.


This is an intermediate level skilled trade position working independently in a production shop environment. The position reports to the CRC Service Supervisor.



  • Setup/install, operate engines on an engine dynamometer in a test cell to perform performance and quality control inspections, perform diagnostics, make minor repairs as needed, and prepare the unit for shipping.
  • Prepare and submit detailed, complete and legible data reports of all engine testing and calibration adjustments performed using prescribed forms and procedures in a timely manner.
  • Maintain the dynamometer test cell area as well as all related instrumentation and equipment in accordance with all prescribed quality and safety standards.
  • Keep supervisor regularly apprised of status of assigned work and assist in addressing customer questions and concerns.
  • Maintain work area, tools, and equipment to promote a clean and safe environment in accordance with all prescribed contamination control protocols.
  • Maintain a professional and proper personal appearance at all times.
  • Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies and systems.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • engine training and certifications through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred.
  • Minimum 4 to 6 years of hands-on work experience as a diesel technician repairing Caterpillar or competitor heavy equipment or applicable diagnostic and troubleshooting experience as a technician in a truck or industrial engine repair shop.
  • Extensive experience troubleshooting engines, fuel systems, governors, electrical and emission systems on CAT heavy-duty engines.
  • Ability to read and comprehend moderately difficult computer-based schematics, specifications, service and parts literature, technical bulletins, safety manuals, and other related publications.
  • Ability to safely use material handling equipment and tooling and wear company required PPE (protective eyewear, gloves, harnesses, footwear) during a shift assignment that could last between 8 and 10 hours.
  • Good problem-solving skills, detail oriented, and ability to work with a high level of accuracy.
  • Good computer skills using related information system applications (ex: SIS, DBS) and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding customer expectations.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic fast-paced service environment.
  • Ability to work standard five-day work schedule, including daily overtime, and occasional weekend hours as necessary.
  • Possess a complete set of basic mechanic's hand tools including drives, sockets, and wrenches.
