Natural Gas Engine Rebuild Technician-CRC (4 on/4 off Shift)
The Natural Gas Engine Technician is responsible for the set-up, disassembly/re-assembly, overhaul, and rebuild of Caterpillar natural gas-powered industrial engines and related components. This is an intermediate level skilled trade position working independently and/or with guidance from service mentors in a shop-based production-style environment. The position reports to the CRC Oil and Gas Supervisor.
Schedule: 4 on / 4 off rotating 12-plus hour day shifts (e.g., 5:00 AM-5:30 PM, including shift transitions and overtime for production continuity).
- Perform disassembly, inspection, rebuilding and/or re-assembly of natural gas-powered industrial engine systems and components, including but not limited to fuel systems, ignition, carburetion, turbochargers, aftercoolers, emissions controls, electronic systems, and hydraulics/powertrain elements in accordance with all prescribed quality and safety standards.
- Research and determine reusability of parts in accordance with published manufacturer guidelines.
- Coordinate the ordering of replacement parts with designated point of contact.
- Test, measure, and adjust engine systems and components; therein, identify the cause of failure through logical troubleshooting steps and failure analysis (e.g., detonation, misfires, air/fuel issues).
- Setup/install, operate and remove engines and related hardware on an engine dynamometer in a test cell to perform electronic controls calibration, perform diagnostics, make minor repairs as needed, and prepare the unit for shipping.
- Must keep log of building progress, including detailed records of daily/ongoing stages, measurements, adjustments, issues encountered, and handover notes to ensure accurate tracking across shifts and for quality/completion verification.
- Prepare and submit detailed, complete and legible service reports of all inspection and actions performed using prescribed forms and procedures in a timely manner.
- Communicate effectively on assigned work status, including regular updates to the supervisor on progress, potential delays, completed stages, and any emerging issues to support efficient workflow and production continuity.
- Proactively identify, document, and address quality concerns during the rebuild process to ensure adherence to Caterpillar standards, prevent rework, and maintain high-quality outcomes that meet or exceed expectations.
- Provide excellent customer service by assisting in addressing customer questions and concerns thoroughly and professionally, communicating repair/rebuild status as needed, and contributing to overall customer satisfaction through reliable, high-quality work.
- Keep supervisor regularly apprised of status of assigned work and assist in addressing customer questions and concerns.
- Maintain work area, tools, and equipment to promote a clean and safe environment.
- Maintain a professional and proper personal appearance at all times.
- Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies and systems.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Diesel engine, natural gas engine, construction equipment and/or truck engine training and certifications through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred.
- Minimum 5 years previous hands-on work experience as a service technician repairing Caterpillar or competitor natural gas engines or applicable diagnostic and troubleshooting experience as a technician in an industrial or oil/gas engine repair shop. Minimum attainment of CAT level 2 diesel technician training certification and ability to demonstrate competency therein required (gas-specific experience/certifications highly preferred).
- Specific experience troubleshooting and repairing CAT natural gas engines in the G3300, G3400, G3500, G3600, or C-series gas variants is preferred.
- Ability to read and comprehend moderately difficult computer-based schematics, specifications, service and parts literature, technical bulletins, safety manuals, and other related publications.
- Solid mechanical systems knowledge of natural gas engines/engine failures, electronic controls, ignition/fuel systems, emissions, electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Proficient in the use of mechanical test equipment.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, electric tools, machine tools, overhead cranes and hoists, slings and chains, electrical testing equipment, hydraulic test equipment and numerous other specialized testing and adjusting equipment during a shift assignment that could last 12 plus hours.
- Ability to safely use material handling equipment and wear company required PPE (protective eyewear, gloves, footwear) during a shift assignment that could last 12 plus hours.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, detail oriented, and ability to work with a high level of accuracy.
- Strong communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal) for effectively conveying assigned work status, quality concerns, progress updates, and customer-related information to supervisors, team members, and customers.
- Good computer skills using related information system applications (ex: SIS, DBS, Cat ET).
- Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding customer expectations through proactive quality focus and responsive service.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced service environment.
- Ability to commit to 4 on/4 off rotating schedule with 12-plus hour day shifts (e.g., 5:00 AM-5:30 PM, including shift transitions and overtime for production continuity).
- Possess a complete set of basic mechanic hand tools including drives, sockets, and wrenches.
