Carolina CAT – Field Project Manager

Incumbent manages and coordinates the Power System’s new projects and tracks the equipment placed into production from initial purchase order receipt to completion of project and conducting follow- ups as necessary.  Incumbent works with the Project Coordinators, answers questions of a more technical nature, and negotiates pricing with vendors. The incumbent must ensure compliance of equipment to maximize profit and achieve customer satisfaction in support of the division’s budgets and goals.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Plans, manages, and coordinates all aspects of Power System’s new projects from initial receipt of the purchase order through completion.
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining all project schedules and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Position is 20% Administrative with typical responsibilities including:


  • Assist sales team in the quoting process and site evaluation
  • Reviewing equipment specifications
  • Assist with the preparation and processing of submittals for new projects
  • Submit CSQis to Caterpillar
  • Tracking project using Salesforce
  • Review equipment orders before release
  • Issuing purchase orders to vendors
  • Provide as-built drawings/interconnects and constructing operation manuals
  • Attend Project kickoff, closeout, and monthly update meetings
  • Position is 80% Field Based with typical responsibilities including:
  • Arranging delivery to the job site
  • Coordinating the start up with the customer and the Field Service Department 
  • Manage and monitor the project’s time schedule
  • Job site evaluations before delivery and startup
  • Site supervision of turnkey projects
  • Site supervision of Service and Rental projects
  • Coordinate and attend any required witness tests
  • Attend start up, commissioning and testing of equipment
  • Parts and equipment deliveries
  • Provide minor hands on labor, programming, and assist service department on jobsite activities
  • Provide startups on Caterpillar retail projects when sales startup technician is unavailable


  • Develops a close working relationship with CAT and their field representatives, Sales and Product Support, as it pertains to the sale, service, and support of the project


  • Work weeks are 40 50 hours. Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed. Must be able to travel overnight as needed.

  • Ability to take on multiple projects at one time while keeping them all on track and not letting performance suffer.
  • Knowledge of 750 kW and above diesel fuel, natural gas, methane, etc. Standby, continuous and CHP projects.
  • Have a working knowledge of fuel systems, ventilation systems and electrical systems that are utilized in power generation applications.
  • Have a working knowledge of Automatic Transfer Switches, Paralleling Switchgear and multiple Generator Sets operating in parallel.
  • Have a working knowledge of hand and power tools


Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering preferred. In lieu of engineering degree 10 years of power generation field experience will be considered
  • Three to Five years’ experience or the equivalent in project management, purchasing and/or customer service, preferably in the power generation industry and particularly with Caterpillar. 


Computer Skills

Advanced computer skills, including experience using Microsoft Office software, as Word and Excel, data base systems and the ability to operate CAT PC and Main Frame Programs.

Auto CAD, Scheduling Software, Adobe Professional


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Project Management Professional (PMP) training or Certification helpful


Language Skills

Must be able to communicate with internal and external customers. Must be able to communicate in a calm, professional manner to create a problem-solving process and an environment to clarify and solve problems.


Mathematical Skills

Mathematical methods and techniques used in Engineering


Reasoning Ability

Must be able to understand how and why power generation systems operate as a complete system. Use this ability to orchestrate a project and present a complete working system to the customer.
