Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is hiring a Management Trainee in Warrenton, Virginia.

We are 2000 employees strong with over 30 locations that sell and service the Caterpillar product line in the heavy equipment construction, rental, and power systems industries. Trainees will work in Parts and Service Operations and be provided the opportunity to learn about Caterpillar equipment while training to embrace “The Carter Way” that will help support our organization’s focus on serving our customers to enable them to achieve their highest level of success. In addition to learning operations, you will gain a well-rounded introduction to our entire business model, spending time in other key areas and being immersed in Carter’s Continuous Improvement and Digital Technology initiatives. Your training will also focus on building and improving leadership and managerial skills, including a strong emphasis on valuable soft skills, such as communication and empathy, teamwork, and problem-solving to enhance your skills and develop progressive relationships with our customers and the employees you manage.

While training, you'll quickly become involved in the day-to-day parts and service work-flow to begin productive interaction with employees and customers, growing your skills, knowledge and opportunities.

Carter is seeking energetic candidates with strong work ethics who are able to work in a fast-paced service environment. High mechanical aptitude is a strong plus. College degree in Operations Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field, or 3 years industry experience, preferably in a lead role.


  • Self-starter able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must gave excellent people skills with aspiration to develop into a strong leader.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented with strong time management/organizational skills.
  • Strong PC and administrative skills, with the ability and desire to adapt to changing technology.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Able to work hours required to meet job needs and customer demands.
  • Willingness to work out of town up to 75% of the time during training period and travel throughout Carter’s territory.
  • Must be open for the possibility of relocation within Carter’s territory.

Must meet physical requirements for the job, including the ability sit or stand for prolonged periods of time. Able to lift, carry and maneuver items up to 20 pounds in weight.
