Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is hiring a Service Manager in Richmond, Virginia.  The Service Manager position is responsible for directing and coordinating customer service activities by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. Will confer with customers and representatives to evaluate and maintain good customer relations by servicing accounts in a timely manner, resolving complaints and ensuring effective communications.  Will develop and grow business through the management of service to achieve targeted sales and gross profit margins. Will monitor and control service expenses to ensure income is maintained at highest possible percentage.  Must administer all company safety policies and training according to established procedures along with ensuring conformance to company policies and best practice. Engage in the typical responsibilities of a manager, including planning, evaluating, organizing, reporting and integrating.  Responsible for overseeing staff, conducting performance evaluations, training and development of staff, etc.  Seeking candidates who are dedicated self-starters with proven leadership and team-management experience. Prefer background in service operations and comprehensive knowledge of heavy equipment repair procedures and applications.  College/technical degree, or comparable industry experience, preferred.  

Requirements for the Service Manager position include:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude; able to read, understand, interpret and convey technical information.
  • Proficient in the use of a computer; able to adapt to changing technology.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, quickly evaluate facts and maintain good judgment when making decisions.
  • Able to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction by identifying and resolving problems promptly.
  • Effectively manage work in process by ensuring work orders are closed in accordance with established time-lines.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled safety meetings and enforce all safety policies and procedures; investigate and report on-the-job accidents or safety hazards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to read, analyze, and interpret general business reports, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
  • Able to work hours required to meet job and customer demands.  

Physical requirements must be met for the Service Manager job, including the ability sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.  Able to lift, carry and maneuver items up to 20 pounds in weight. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.  Additional duties may be assigned.
