H.O. Penn Machinery, the Caterpillar dealer for Metro NY and the entire state of Connecticut, is currently HIRING a Shop Handyman to join their Holtsville, NY (Lond Island) Heavy Equipment Service team!

**Occasional travel using company vehicles may be required - clean & valid driver's license is required.




Reporting to the Heavy Equipment Shop Foreman, this position is responsible for the following tasks:


Successfully provide service which solves customers’ product support requirements with supervision:

  • Properly select and use basic hand tools as well as special tooling identified in service literature
  • Safely and properly use lifting devices such as chain slings, straps, and cranes
  • Demonstrate competence in assisting “A” and “B” mechanics
  • Effectively and efficiently repair/rebuild components with supervision
  • Document steps taken to correct problems daily on job cards

Maximize the efficient use of service and repair procedures with supervision:

  • Receive and execute work instructions from foreman
  • Plan and execute maintenance and minor repairs
  • Effectively communicate status of work with shop foreman
  • Properly use service and parts literature to write a correct parts list and research technical information
  • Provide service report upon completion of job

Successfully contribute toward a culture of safety through completion of all safety initiatives and demonstrating safe work habits:

  • Complete/attend all safety meetings, computer-based trainings, audits, and other safety trainings as assigned
  • Work in a proactive, safe manner in compliance with all safety practices, policies, and training
  • Immediately resolve and/or report all safety issues to supervisor
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with all Contamination Control Initiatives



  • 2 years’ experience in a repair shop environment or completion of mechanical trade school
  • Clean & valid driver’s license required
  • Must be computer literate to run computer-based diagnostic software
  • Strong mechanical aptitude familiarity with construction equipment shop a plus
  • Ability to operate a forklift and various shop equipment
  • Must possess mechanic’s basic hand tools

  • Standing and walking
  • Lifting (up to 60lbs.)
  • Carrying (up to 50lbs.)
  • Push/pull (up to 80lbs.)
  • Sitting, rotation and forward bending (sitting and standing)
  • Hand coordination and reaching
  • Grip (30lbs. with both hands, 80lbs. with preferred/single hand) 
  • Foot pedal operation
  • Climbing stairs and ladders
  • Crawling, low work (kneeling), and awkward positioning
  • Outdoor work (as required)
  • Wearing 10-20lbs. of protective clothing, including fire resistant clothing, welding helmet/shield, & ANSI-rated protective footwear (as required)
